WEATHER IN AUGUST
Lincoln College Summary
, The first 10 days last month at. Lincoln were cold and wet, with 3.88 in of the monthly rainfall of 4.19 in falling in that period, but the remainder of the month was mild with several calm days, says the report of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. The sunshine of 174 hr was 32hr above average. There were 17 days with frost and the maximum temperature reached was 67.8 deg on August 24.
Flooding occurred in most low-lying areas during the early part of the month, causing losses of young lambs and shorn hoggets and ewes. | Improved conditions, however, saw what will probably be the best and quickest lambing for many years. High percentages of lambs born were reported and losses were light during the latter part of the month.
Some cultivation was possible as the land dried. Autumn-sown wheat paddocks were hard on top be. cause of the frequent heavy rain but lucerne and established pastures showed signs of growth after the middle of the month. Greenfeed and new grass grew well. In home gardens, vegetables were sown early and early spring bulbs gave a touch of colour to flower gardens.
