GENTLEMEN’S MATCH
Australians Draw (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON, September 1. The Australians’ match against the Gentlemen petered out in a tame draw at Lord’s today. The Gentlemen, in spite of the loss of both openers in the first quarter of an hour this morning, batted all day. At stumps, they were 325 for eight wickets, the match having been saved for them by a sound 90 by the Warwickshire captain, M. Smith, and a belligerent 63 by the Middlesex skipper, I. Bedford. The only consolation for the Australians’ long and frustrating day in the field was in G. McKenzie reaching 50 wickets for the tour. The Australian bowlers could not break through the Gentlemen’s dour defence in a day which, except for the innings of Bedford and Insole, bored the small crowd of 3000 and later angered a section in front of the tavern bar. Scores:—
Total for eight wkts. 325 Fall of wickets: one for 24, two for 25. three for 70, four for 141, five for 195. six for 11*9. seven for 281, eight for 305.
