Women’s Hockey Otago To Meet Auckland After Beating Canterbury

"The Press" Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH. August 31. The previous K Cup winners, Maniototo. fully extended Eastern Southland in their game today in the Major B section of the New Zealand women’s hockey tournament, and won 3-1. In a hard fought, even game, Maniototo secured its fifth win and so enters the final of the tourney. This proved the game of the day. and was very fast and exciting. The hockey of both sides was of the highest standard so far seen at the tournament. Maniototo had the better of the play early, and was brilliant on attack but Eastern’s defence held. Maniototo led 1-0 at halftime. Play resumed with Eastern attacking strongly with good forward combination. It soon equalised. Neither side let up. but Maniototo broke away to score its second goal. Nearing the end, C. Evans scored a brilliant goal for Maniototo. By the defeat of Canterbury by Otago today, Auckland and Otago must now play off in the section final tomorrow, with the winner meeting Maniototo on Saturday.

Otago, playing consistent hockey. deserved its win. Canterbury was disappointing. The forwards had no combination, and but for the fine efforts of S. Comer, N. Lennie and B. Makinson the score would have been much higher. Ashburton was trounced by Auckland A today, but in spite of Auckland’s superiority throughout, Ashburton attacked early. The team was on to defence for the rest of the game. Malvern Beats Taranaki Malvern had its first win over Taranaki. Play was not

good but Taranaki did show some bright stick work. However, the side could not turn its moves to advantage in the circle. Taranaki netted late in the game, but Malvern had the better combination.
