UNIVERSITY DIVISION

Invitation Plans

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 28. After the dissolution of the University of New Zealand at the end of this year the Speaker of the House of Representatives will not be able to follow past practice and invite its chancellor and vicechancellor to the opening of Parliament. To represent the University instead, the present Speaker (Mr Algie) has advised that he intends to invite the chancellors and vicechancellors of the four universities in rotation. The first so honoured next year will be the oldest— Otago University. In 1963 it will be Canterbury’s turn, 1964 Auckland, and 1965 Victoria. The council of Victoria University was advised of this plan today.
