TYING TROUT FLIES

Lady Cobham’s New Hobby

Lady Cobham, wife of the Gtovemor-General, has a fascinating hobby—tying trout flies. She had no dry fly experience before coming to New Zealand, only having fished for salmon in Ireland. She first became interested in tying trout flies while on a South Pacific tour on board the Royalist, The captain demonstrated how cotton, feathers, glue, varnish and other materials could make a fascinating hobby and it was not long before she landed her first fish. The problem of obtaining the right material was partly solved during the shooting season, when all her friends were asked to save feathers; the rest came from England. Though a careful and fastidious worker, Lady Cobham is still too fast in her art, and has more flies than she can hope to use.
