All Top Seeds Successful

Aided by cold temperatures, the favourites did not have to exert themselves when the New .Zealand badminton championships began in Auckland this evening. -* The top two seeds in both the men’s and women’s singles easily reached the second round, and other ranked players had safe passages. N. R. Thompson (Southland), the fourth seed for the men’s title, was one of the few who had to play hard. Nearly Beaten Against N. Riggall (Auckland) Thompson was nearly beaten in the first game. After clinching it at 17-15. he won the next, 15-6. A. S. Burns, the Auckland tennis selector, showed that 40 years of age is not too old to start badminton by beating K. Greenwood (Wellington). 15-8, 15-5 Among the women. Mrs Valerie Gow (Auckland), the third seed, had a decisive win over Mrs D. Hay, the Otago No. 2 player, 11-2 11—4.
