(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 28 W. Thomas (Wellington), the New Zealand snooker champion of 1959, and T. Yesberg (Canterbury) the title-holder, showed impressive form during their first-round matches in the national snooker championships in Auckland today. Others to retain two lives were R. Franks (Canterbury), the 1954 drampion, R. King (Auckland), and D. Epae (Wellington). Four other contestants . will play their first matches tomorrow. ’ Detailed Results D. Epae (Wellington) beat R. Welsh (Southland). 44-34, 58-30, 79-34. R. Franks (Canterbury) beat B. Clapham (Auckland). 21-59, 57-34, 55-16, 58-36. R. King (Auckland) beat J. Tracey (Auckland), 45-66, 4815. 49-31, 55-22. W. Thomas (Wellington) beat 3. Hita (North Auckland), 3462. 61-40. 55-30, 85-4 T. Yesberg (Canterbury) beat R. Lilias (Auckland), 63-56, 7626, 45-41. Hippo Calf The Auckland Zoo’s hippopotamus, Nada, gave birth to a 601 b baby just after 11.30 yesterday morning. The baby —its sex is not known—was born in shallow water. After paddling shakily around the pool for a few seconds n went to its mother for a feed and then drowsed off for a while nestled between Nada's head and the rocky edge of the pooh This is Nada’s third calf.—(P.A.) Duke’s Visit—The Australian Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) said today he did not think the Duke of Edinburgh would have any formal engagements in Australia other than opening the Empire Games at Perth in November, 1962.—Canberra, August 28.
