Mr AL J. Learmonth
“The Press” Special Service * AUCKLAND, August 28. I Mr Alexander James Learmonth, a New Zealand engineer. who distinguished himself in many parts of the world, has died in Auckland at the age of 60. In the Second World War he rose to the rank of major in an engineers’ unit in the Middle East. Mr Learmonth, who was bom in Balfour. Scotland, gained his bachelor of civil engineering degree at Canterbury University. He joined the British firm of Armstrong. Whitworth, Ltd., which built the Arapuni hydro-electric scheme and then he was engaged on the building of the Zambesi bridge in East Africa. He was later stationed in Britain and worked on engineering contracts in several countries. On his return to New Zealand about 10 years ago he joined the Ministry of Works and was in charge of the Roxburgh hydro scheme towards the end of construction work there. His next major assignment was supervision of the Meremere project He was chief civil engineer there at the time of his death. Mr Learmonth is survived by his wife and a son.
