New Project For Wharenui Pool

THE spirit of enterprise A : broad in the t Wharenui Amateur £ imnung 'Hub could well have been dispelled by the success of the club’s new pool project. Three years of concentrated effort had brought about the construction of the most modern and up-to-date pool of its type in the South Island —a result that could have justified a certain amount of resting on laurels. But the temptation to sit back and enjoy the benefits of the hard work has been submerged by a new wave of enthusiasm on the part of the club’s officials. They have set their sights on a fresh target: the provision of permanent covered seating, the installation of lighting and the carrying out of other small improvements at the pool. The basis of the project is

the provision of the covered seating along the eastern and southern sides of the pool, which will serve the twofold purpose of seating 500 rpectators and providing protection from the keen winds that blow from those quarters. z Should the move be successful —and club officials are confident that it will be— Wharenui will be the only pool in Christchurch with covered seating. The pool itself, 110 ft by 44ft, is up to New Zealand championship standard and the improvements planned will make it an undoubted acquisition to Christchurch in general and the Riccarton district in particular. The club has contracted the job out to the Riccarton Rover Scouts, who have just completed the construction of their own scout den. The

I scouts are seeking money for I a trip to Australia and, with , some tradesmen in the group, ■ are eagerly tackling the new I job. It is expected to take ■ from six to eight weeks. 1 To raise the necessary ■ finance, the club plans to conduct a mystery envelope campaign. To this end it has , issued invitations to 300 ' businessmen in and around , Riocarton to attend a function , on Monday night at which j the scheme will be outlined. , For the following four weeks , canvassers representing the club will call on these businessmen for offers of goods ' and vouchers. It is hoped to obtain 30,000 ' 2s vouchers for public sale on October 13. Already between 3000 and 4000 vouchers • have been promised, includi ing one for a television set. i So before the start of serious t canvassing, the task seems ! assured of success.
