Australian Expert To Inspect Roads In N.Z.
A review of some of New Zealand’s reading problems i* to be carried out during the next three weeks by the director of the Australian Road Research Board, Mr D. F. Glynn, of Melbourne. Mr Glynn is expected to arrive in Christchurch today. The itinerary for Mr Glynn's tour has been arranged by the Reading Division of the Ministry of Works. It has been arranged 'that be will travel as widely as possible by ear so as to see the standard of the roads and get an idea ot the problems facing local engineers Mr Glynn will also attend a reading symposium being organised by the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers, and wiM be there as a gues speaker and observer. The symposium will be held or September 14 and 15. Among the problems whict Mr Glynn will see are fros heave in Otago, the saturate! clays of Northland, and th< difficulties caused by pap; country in the central Nortb Island. and the notorious stretch of unstable country at Morere, between Wairoi and Gisborne. Recent storm damage will be inspected such as the Parapera road between Raetihi and Wanganui, which is still closed to traffic because of slips and subsidences. Mr Glynn will inspect and appraise facilities for reading research, including the
Ministry of Works central laboratory at Gracefield, some of the department’s district laboratories, and the university schools of engineering in Christchurch and Auckland He will also have discussions with officers of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The Australian Road Research Board was formed in March, 1960, by the National
Association of Australian State Road Authorities. and its objects are to co-ordinate, encourage, and arrange research into such problems as road safety, cheaper and better road surfaces, traffic flows, planning for future highway needs and the economscs of road transport. Reading division engineers hope that Mr Glynn's visit will lead to a close association between Australia and New Zealand in this kind of research. Before his appointment as director of the board, Mr Glynn was manager of a firm specialising in road pavement construction by soil stabilisation with cement. He is an honours graduate of the University of Melbourne, and for some years was on the staff of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works.
