NELSON DISTRICT METHODIST SYNOD
Work Of C.0.R.5.0. Warmly Praised
(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, Aug. 23.
Strong concern was expressed in the Nelson District Methodist Synod in session at Westport this morning on the huge amount of want there is in the world today. ‘That is one of the biggest problems of our modern age,” said the Rev. A. Newman, of Greymouth. Commenting upon. the work of C.0.R.5.0., Mrs S. Airey (Greymouth) referred to the loose claims made about that organisation, especially concerning the amount spent in administration costs. “C.0.R.5.0. is doing a magnificent job.” said the chairman (the Rev. Dr. M. A. McDowell. of Nelson). “We ought to hit hard when there is uninformed criticism.” "It is a pity that some members of the church are so concerned with personal salvation that they are not interested in the salvation of the world through relief organisations," said Mr Newman.
The Synod unanimously endorsed a resolution reouesting the ' Methodist Conference to recommend that the New Zealand Government budget set aside at least 10 per cent, of the national income for the economic development of underdeveloped countries, even if this means an increase in the level of taxation. A recommendation, “that Conference recommend to the Government that, with a view to the provision of clinical treatment, it facilitates investigation into the causes of the homosexual condition, using the resources of Government departments, and subsidising educational,. medical and psychiatric research,” was also carried.
