SHIPMENTS OF POTATOES

Total Near Last Year’s Figure For toe first time tois season the quantity of potatoes shipped from Lyttelton has approached last year’s figure but North Island purchases are still more than 50,000 sacks below last year. Up to last Saturday 241,923 sacks of potatoes had been shipped from Lyttelton, 46,525 sacks in tihe last fortnight. Details of shipments for the fortnight, with season’s totals in parenthesis, are as follows: Auckland, 10,613 sacks (66,407); Wellington, 7061 (30,013); Napier, Gisborne, 10,604 (43,930); West Coast; North Island, 10,824 (46,306); Australia and Fiji, 7323 (35,267). Last year’s shipments to the comparable date totalled 242,195 sacks of which only 4154 had been exported to Fiji In 1959 total shipments for toe season, to date were 254,848 sacks.
