CRIMEAN WAR MEDALS
Gift To Auckland Museum “The Press" Special Seroica AUCKLAND, August 22. Three medals won by her father in the Crimean War have been presented to the Auckland War Memorial Museum by an 89-year-old Parnell resident, Mrs A. R. Pascoe, whose father, Mr Alfred Button, was signalman for th-e Lyttelton Harbour Board at the Sumner signal station many years ago. The medals, two Crimean and one Baltic, were presented with a number of papers dating back to 1847, when Mir Button joined the Royal Navy at the age of 17. He served in the ships Ocean, Wellington, Ganges, Spider. Trafalgar and Hawke, being discharged from the Hawke in May, 1856. Mr Button, his wife, three daughters and two sons left Maidstone, Kent, in 1875, and came to New Zealand in the sailing ship Aliumbagh.
In 1901 the Duke and Duchess of York, later to become King George V and Queen Mary, inspected ranks of former servicemen in Hagley Park, Christehurch, during their visit to New Zealand, Mrs Pascoe said that the Duchess had been interested in her father’s Baltic medal. She had noticed that the ribbons were frayed, and had said that she would have new ones supplied. Lord Ranfurly, the Governor, gave the ribbons to Mr Button later.
