Art Thefts Arrest

A Sardinia-born Italian was arrested today in connexion with two thefts on the French Riviera last year of paintings valued at £21,420, the Associated Press reported. Police alleged that the man, Giovanni Pelisi, aged 54, was a member of a gang which, they claimed, stole the paintings from a VilleFranche mansion and the Mentone Museum and took them to Italy Several of the paintings were recovered from galleries in Genoa and Milan.

The French Riviera has been plagued by a series of art thefts over the last 18 months.
