"Hypnotism Not For Everyone”
(New zealana Press Association)
DUNEDIN, August 21. “Hypnotism is not for everyone to be dabbling in —it should be practised mainly by psychiatrists and anaesthetists.” This is the opinion of Professor J. Aitchison, vicepresident of the British Hypnosis Society, and director of studies at the Glasgow Dental Hospital and School. Interviewed in Dunedin today. Professor Aitchison said he had retained his position in the Hypnosis Society for many years "merely to try to save hypnosis from charlatanism.”
“I don’t think everyone and everybody should be playing around with it.” he said.
Hypnosis could be properly used by anaesthetists, who were accustomed to putting people into an unconscious state, he said.
“I am very keen on it being used for blind people,” said Professor Aitchison. Dental treatment could be very frightening for blind persons, who could not see what was being done or used, he said. Hypnotism could help such persons and could also give confidence to persons newly blind in helping them to begin to go out and do things, such as dancing. and help in cases of shock. Professor Aitchison will tour New Zealand for two weeks, under the auspices of the Nuffield Foundation, lecturing on hypnosis in the main centres.
