Maori Tribal System
The Maori tribal system could outlive its usefulness. Mr N. Gray told a meeting of the Canterbury Racial Equality Association last evening. He said tribal committees should prepare Maoris to enter life with Europeans. Mr Gray said he believed in complete integration. When a Maori had been prepared to take his part in New Zealand society sometimes the tribal committee hindered him. Maori schools should similarly prepare Maoris to take their place in New Zealand society and should be attended only by those pupils who were not ready to enter an ordinary school, Mr Gray said.
“I do not think we will lose the Maori culture and individuality,” he said.
