AWARD TO PROFESSOR

Fellowship To Visit U.K. (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 10. One of Nerw Zealand's most eminent scientists, Professor L. H. Briggs, professor of chemistry at Auckland University, has been awarded a British Commonwealth Visiting Fellowship for 1961-62. The fellowships, among the very highest honours for Commonwealth scientists, are intended for a few senior scholars of established reputation and achievement. They are awarded by the Conunonwealth Scholarship Commission in Britain, through the Association of British Commonwealth Universities. Professor Briggs will be attached to the University of Aberdeen, but will also make short visits to other universities in Britain.

“This is a very great honour and distinction for Professor Briggs and the university,” said the ViceChancellor of Auckland University (Mr K. J. Maidment) today.

“This is the first fellowship to be offered to New Zealand, and we are very pleased that it has gone to Professor Briggs.” Professor Briggs will leave New Zealand in October, returning about August next year.
