SHEARING CONTESTS
Less Emphasis On Speed Urged Too much emphasis was put on speed in shearing competitions, the general committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association agreed yesterday. The committee will draw the attention of the New Zealand Wool Board to suggestions by Mr S. M. A. Chaffey, a shearing judge. “It would be an advantage to alter the points slightly, and give not quite so much emphasis to speed,” Mr Chaffey said. Referring to a recent contest. Mr Chaffey said: “I know it was very nice to see the speed kings in action, but I would rather have my sheep shorn by one or two of the slower men.” Because blade shearers were hard to get the prize money should be the same as for machine shearing, he suggested. “One of the weakneesse of these contests' is the placing of too much emphasis on speed,” Mr H. Sidey agreed. He said competitions were becoming almost “shearing races.”
