TROTTING Perth Championship Attempt By Massacre
Although nothing definite is expected to be decided for some weeks, there is a chance that Massacre will attempt to become the first Horse to win the Inter-Dominion Championship series in successive years. Only one horse—Captain Sandy—has won the series twice.
Massacre’s part-owner and trainer, D. J. Campbell, of Ashburton, will wait at least until after he has raced at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s national meeting, which will open tomorrow week at Addington, before making definite plans.
One of Campbell’s biggest worries is the arrangement of-transport from the east, era States of Australia to Perth, where next year’s series will be run in February and March. The trip will definitely not be undertaken if the only means of travelling to Perth is by land. The trip by rail from Adelaide to Perth in the extreme temperatures of summer would have an adverse effect on any horse. That was why the Western Australian horses, Taxi Boy. Sultana and Kiwi Dillon failed to strike form at Addington last February. However, it is expected that air transport will be available. Most of the New South Wales and Victorian horses which have raced in Perth to recent years have been flown across. It. is expected that the Western Australian Trotting Association, the organisation running the championships, will help any New Zealand owners in arranging transport. Massacre has done particularly well since he upset calculations with a win over False Step and Arania in the Inter-Dominion Championship Grand Final at Ad«on last February. The ster flve-year-old is stronger than ever and he is expected to develop topclass form this season. Massacre is very looselyassessed, being on toiin 32sec for two miles. He will have almost unlimited opportunities to Canterbury in the next few months and he should have little difficulty winning a major handicap before Christmas. He is an out-and-out stayer and is best suited when the pace is strong. That was one of the reasons for his win to the £lO,OOO Grand Final last February. His barrier manners appear to have improved since the start off last season and from now he should be capable of holding a handy position throughout his races.
Also Working
As well as Massacre, Osnspbell has Wiella and a two-year-old filly by U. Scott from Globe Princess in work, Wiella is a recent addition to his team. She may have her first start for him in the Canterbury Challenge Stakes on the second day of tile national meeting. Wiella is a four-year-old mare by Lochella, a winner when trained at Washdyke by P. P. Gallagher. She is out of. a moderate performer to Ikawai, a daughter of U. Scott and the Jack Potts mare, Rowi. Ikawai is also the dam of Delaforce and Lynn Royal, both of which showed fair form only. Globe Princess, which showed no form, the dam of the U. Scott filly, also left the promising Congo Boy to the same sire. Globe Princess was got by Super Globe from Lucky Princess, by Lucky Jack. She was bred at Rakaia by Mr R. F. Moore, who has bred from her. Company Road, a five-year-old mare by Whipster from Queen Jewel, showed promise last season. She paced an outstanding race from 48 yards at Waimate in July to finish third to Bonniebum and Rolex. Unfortunately she injured a stifle shortly after the race and Campbell is not hopeful that she will be able to race again. New Club The newly-formed' » Mawhere Trotting Club to Greymouth has decided to apply to the New Zealand Trotting Conference for registration as a non-totalisator club. If the application is approved, the club intends holding a twilight meeting with three races some time before Christmas and to a hold a gymkhana on Easter Monday. There vzill again be three races at the second meeting, while a‘ qualifying trial will also be rub. , At New Brighton J. G. McDonald is-build-ing up a fairly large team at New Brighton and he has a number of newcomers. Aldora is being prepared for early spring racing. He had three trainers last season, but failed to win a race, although he showed speed at times. Hancove, a half-brother by Garrison Hanover to Aldora, showed promise Bist season when he gained a win and
a "placing from six starts. He could again pay his way. Disaster is an over-grown seveo-year-old half-brother to Massacre. He was tried at qualifying trials last season, but was not impressive Kyle Anne, which raced as a pacer early last season, is being trained as a trotter. She is a half-sister by Fallacy to Kyle Lass, Kyle Maid, Premium, and Kyle Nurse.
Trials Now On Monday The totals, which were, to have been ran at Addington today by the Canterbury Trotting Owners’ and Breeders’ Association have been postponed until Monday. The Addington course has received a thorough soaking In the last tow days and there is no chance ef it recovering fully before the weekend.
