Maps Completed
The post-war revision of a one-inch-to-one-mile map of Britain has just been completed. For the first time in history, the whole of Britain is now covered by a single series of maps at this scale in which all sheets are similar in projection, size and style. Working to a programme of about 20 sheets a year, it has taken nine years to complete 190 sheets of the series, covering the country from the Shetlands to Cornwall. But the face of the country is changing continually and already nine fully revised sheets have had to be published. The maps show road and rail routes, bus stations. youth hostels, national parks, churches, post offices, telephone boxes, battle sites, Roman rains, lighthouses, windmills and public houses. The one-inch-to-one mile map has become a best seller and tops one million sales each year.—London. August 7.
