BURNSIDE STOCK SALE

(N.Z Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 9. The yarding of fat cattle at the Burnside sale today numbered 320, compared with 276 last week, and as a result prices could be quoted 50s to 60s a head below those of last week's offering. ' The quality of the yarding was not as high as last week, but was still good- Cows and heifers were not in over-supply and met a ready sale. The sale opened on a quiet note, improved slightly in the middle stages, and then fell away again towards the finish. With an entry of 2511 fat sheep, a drop of 630 from last week’s total, it was surprising that values did not receive a boost. Hogget and young wether values could be quoted on a par with recent rates. Older wethers were slightly erratic. The best held their own. but there was an easing tendency for some of the lighter weights. Ewes generally were a fraction easier, although a few pens of top sheep met strong competition and would fully hold last week s rates. A reduction in numbers was also recorded in the fat Jamb section. 348. against 476. Only a handful of top quality were yarded, the bulk of the entry consisting of medium sorts. Demand was once again steady and on a similar level to recent weeks.
