A story about this International group of students was carried recently in the weekly magaxlne section of the Manitoba "Free Press" • Mr McEwan, and his wife who works in a children • library there, are featured In the article. The "Free Press” saya Mr McEwan wants to use his • energy and trained talents in ' New Zeeland. • Cytogenetics of wheat is his official study at the University of Manitoba and It ft in this branch of plant . science that he is earning his Ph.D. He graduated in botany from the University of New Zealand, gained his master's degree in 1»54 and then worked for the Government as a wheat breeder. The “Free Press” quotes him as saying: "I wanted to work with crop plants. New Zealand produces only half the wheat to meet our requirements. The rest is imported from Australia."
Mr McEwan is assisted by a grant from the National Research Council of Canada in his study of new wheat breeding techniques. It is expected that Mr McEwan will return to New Zealand in November.
