Accommodation Problems At Lincoln College
A request from the Wool Research Organisation to provide accommodation for research workers, who would move over to the organisation’s new laboratories, scheduled for occupation in 1965 or 1966. would heighten the accommodation problems of Canterbury Agricultural College, said the college principal iDr. M. M. Burns' at a meeting of the board of governors yesterday. In 1962 it would be necessary to convert some rooms to provide additional laboratory accommodation to meet the increasing needs fnr senior classes, including masterates and for research. Dr. Burns said. All suitable space in the veterinary building would be used for research. Preliminary talks had been held with architects concerning the sketch plans for the proposed teaching block. Dr. Burns said An architect from the Ministry of. Works. Wellington, would visit the college tomorrow: If the teaching block went on the old footbail field it would face west, with two wings facing east. A matter of concern was that no single hall in the proposed block would accommodate more than 100 persons. It was a suggestion that a conference hall for the teaching staff be built in a single contained wing in the middle of the block between the two other wings. Dr. Burns said. This could be used for teaching purposes by both the staff and college when not in use as a Conference hall. With the additional numbers the college had to legislate for, it seemed a short-
sighted policy to have no hall capable of accommodating 100 persons, said Mr D. W Bain. To Mr Bain's question. Dr Burns said that two classes were being run together at present, making a total of 94 students in “very poor conditions.” With increased number of students this number of students would well exceed 100. Dr. Burns reported that work in preparation for sketch plans of the animal research laboratory was going ahead. The board discussed the matter of the college heating. It was said that the present demand was well above the boilers’ capecity, and a new boiler would have to be installed for heating the teaching block. Dr. Burns said that the Universities Grants Committee would visit the college in October.
