Control of Bloat 0 : “7 have a large herd of cows. Last year I had some trouble with Bloat and I want to prevent a further occurrence this year. What do you suggest?” An excellent anti-bloat agent is "Blokure”. It acts as an antifoaming agent in the cows stomach and can be applied to drinking troughs, as a drench or as a pasture spray. The latter method provides the most complete control, as the cows continually ingest the anti-bloat agent. It does not affect either the pasture or the animals appetite, nor does it cause taint in the milk. Cows grazing in sprayed areas must, of course, not have access to unsprayed areas. Control measures should be taken in advance or as soon as conditions favouring bloat are present according to local knowledge and experience. Forage Harvesters 0 ! “Are silage or forage harvesters essential to the making of good silage?" * ! The answer many successful farmers would give to this question is “No”. And on their experience this answer would be correct. However, it is essential to ask this question in a different way—- “ Have these machines an economic place in farming?” To this question, the answer on many farms is undoubtedly "Yes!” We would advise that care be exercised in the purchase of a suitable machine. Their uses are described in freely available leaflets and on the labels. These also state the composition of the material and give a brief indication of its main uses. For instance, Shell Weedkiller L—this is 2,4-DB —and is used for the control of weeds in lucerne and new pastures. Having guided the farmer to select the correct Shell Weedkiller in this way, the complete details of application are described oa the label, to ensure the best results from the weedkiller. Your Shell Distributor will also be pleased to give advice in the selection and use of Shell Weedkillers. Sowing Nitrogen with Wheat O' “Does it pay to sow nitrogen with wheat?" *'• There are many factors to be considered. If the wheat is sown after peas or lupins then sowing nitrogen with wheat would be wasteful. However if you are growing wheat a third time, or following a poor old pasture then nitrogen would be beneficial. In tins case better results would probably be obtained by sowing extra superphosphate with the wheat and applying sulphate of ammonia in the | 'Vx tariy s P nn B/pSnu‘,\ “hr* Forum" M Mother Shell eerviee to Armor,.
