SOUTHDOWN EWE SALE
Petrie Studs Sell Well Stud Southdown ewes from the Swannanoa flock of Mr H. H. Petrie and his two sons’ flocks, Mr M. R. Petrie’s Swan Lea flock, and Mr D. J. Petrie’s Brackenbank flock, met a good demand at a displenishing sale at Timaru. Punchbowl, Kohatu and Arnage bloodlines were prominent in the breeding of many of the ewes and a majority of the ewes were mated to Punchbowl sires. Of 110 one-shear ewes offered 79 were sold at an average of about 13gns and prices ranged from 9gns to 14gns, with an exceptional sale of five from the Swannanoa stud which made 38gns. These were bought by Mr T. Hart (Dunsandel). Of the 31 two-shear ewes, 23 sold from 9Jgns to 15gns at an average of nearly lligns and 33 three-shear and older ewes made from 9?gns to 21gns, averaging 12Jgns. The pen of four at 21gns were bought by V. W. Boag (Lauriston) and carried the Swannanoa prefix also.
