Iraq

Sir,—.War never solved anything. War only prolongs the fleecing of the common peoples. In World War I we were inspired by the false slogan, “A war to end wars.” Did it? When I left Germany in 1919 the Junkers still owned their estates and the souls of the men who tilled them. The old monarchist class supplied the judges who interpreted the constitution. The military class controlled the army. Industry poured wealth into the pockets of magnates. The magnates subsidised Hitler. The Russians had learnt their lessons. Too late, the German common people realised that political liberty cannot be divorced from economic and political power. A World War II was obvious. Hitler, Mussolini, and Japan pursued a war that ended in disaster. Vestigial tribal instincts defeated them. So I advise all the "F.C.’s” to reorientate their ideas before a World War 111 ends all—Yours, etc., RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, August 3, 1961.
