CANTERBURY B TEAM
University Players Excluded The two University players, M. Taiaroa and Q. Tapsell. chosen for the Canterbury B team to play Country at Lancaster Park on Saturday, would now be excluded from the team, it was agreed by the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. A letter was received from the University club saying that the club's senior team was playing Otago University as a Curtain-raiser to the match between Otago and France at Dunedin on Saturday, and that, the team had been affected by eight of its players being selected for the Canterbury touring side. The letter asked that no players from the University club be considered for the Canterbury B side. It said it could be embarrassing for the club if it was unable to field a strong side at Dunedin. because the match was important and the club felt [it was representing Canter- . bury. j "As it is, the club will have to forgo a chance of playing its junior C side against Meri. vale in the final of the junior grade because of claims of higher teams,” said the letter. The chairman of the committee (Mr H. C. Blazey) said the request was a reasonable one. At least three members voted against the motion that players from the club be excluded from the team. The letter also said that the club would not enter a team in the senior knock-out competition because of a lack of players. A letter was also received from the Merivale club saying that its senior team did not wish to enter the knock-out competition. A further letter from the University club asking that seven of its under 20 grade players be regraded from the B team to the A team was also received by the committee. Permission was granted. The letter said that the A team would be affected on Saturday with five players playing in the under 20 representative team and others injured. It would be impossible to field a team unless replacements were taken from the B side, as most players in the third grade team were over 20.
