RUGBY French Team To Play Southland

(Neu> Zealand Press Association)

INVERCARGILL, Aug. 8. The touring French Rugby team is likely to have fair weather and ground conditions to match when it plays Southland at Rugby Park, Invercargill, tomorrow. Invercargill has had fine weather in the last few days. Rugby Park will not be the firmest ground the tourists have played on but will provide fair going. A drying wind and bright sunshine today dried it considerably. With two wins and a Joss in recent weeks, and with a Ranfurly Shield challenge in Auckland at the end of the month. Southland has hopes of becoming the sixth New Zealand team to beat the tourists. To date Southland teams have played against 22 overseas teams for 13 wins, a draw and eight losses. Renowned For Forwards The home team, renowed for its forwards, has another fine pack this year and also has a better-than-average back-line. In its last match against Otago at Rugby Park on Saturday, Southland scored five tries. The captain and former All Black, W. R. Archer, is the first five-eighths. Outside him is his younger brother and All Black trialist, W. J. Archer, and K. F. Laidlaw is at centre. Laidlaw, who did not play in the trials because of a shoulder injury, could be selected for the New Zealand third test team. The chairman of the national selection panel (Mr N. J. McPhail) will see him tomorrow. He will be marking the French pair, G. Boniface and J. Pique. Both Frenchmen are quicker than Laidlaw but may not get past him. In recent matches when the French half-back pair, P. Albaladejo and P. Lacroix, have been included, the backline has not functioned smoothly with the scrum half. Lacroix, throwing indifferent

passes. This could be a trial, match for him. For at least two of the others the match will also be a trial match. They are the hooker, J. Rollet, who went close to displacing J.i Laudouar from the position in the second test, and the front row prop, P. Eazals. who was displaced from the French row in the second test. With only two more' matches after tomorrow’s; before the third test at Christchurch the form this time will count a good deal in the selection of the test team. However, there are likely to be few changes from the side which played in Wellington. [ The teams are: Southland: G. S. McKenzie. J. G. Allison. K. F. Laidlaw. R. W. Todd, W. J. Archer, W ' R. Archer (captain). A. J.i Tait, A. J. Soper. E A. Gor-’ ton, J. B. Porteous, E. J. Haz-i left, L. K. Fyall, H. W. O'Neill. G. G. Spencer, R. 6. Jackman. France: C. Lacaze, J. Dupuy, J. Pique. G. Boniface, H. Rancoule, P. Albaladejo, P. Lacroix, R. Lefevre. F. Moncla (captain), J. P. Saux, M. Cassiede. M. Crauste, P. Cazals, J. Rollet, A. Bianco.
