Australian Duty On Paper Help To N.Z.

AUCKLAND. August 4. New Zealand wood pulp manufacturers welcomed new protective duties imposed on paper imported into Australia. The Australian Minister for Trade (Mr McEwen) announced temporary duties on certain types of wrapping paper, litho and printing papers and boards. They will be £A9 a ton in addition to present duties of up to £A2I a ton. “This will increase our Australian market for pulp," said the general manager of New Zealand Forest Products, Ltd., Mr R. H. Smythe. Pulp exports from New Zealand had been affected by large quantities of paper and paper boards imported into Australia, he said. The new duties would help
Australian paper manufacturers to sell more, thus increasing the demand for New Zealand pulp. Mr Smythe said his company had previously exported about 12,500 tons of pulp yearly to Australia. So far this year, only 2500 tons had been sent. The tonnage would step up now. he thought. The managing-director of the Tasman Pulp and Paper Company, Ltd., Mr D. W Tinunis, said the duties should improve the situation. It would take some time, however, for stocks of imported and domestic board and pup already in Australia to be used up. Shipments of pulp from his company to Australia were down by about half so far this year. Last year the company sent about 40.000 tons of pulp to Australia.
