BOTH LEGS AMPUTATED
Sub-Lieutenant Mulgrew
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 8. Sub-Lieutenant Peter Mulgrew, who was badly frostbitten when climbing in the Himalayas, has had both legs amputated below the knee in Green Lane Hospital, Auckland. His condition today was "quite fair.” Gangrene made the amputations necessary. Three weeks ago SubLieutenant Mulgrew, aware that he would lose his frostbitten toes, said: “I can still wear my snow boots. I am going back to the mountains." It was his second operation in five days—his chest was opened last week to clear an infection. Sub-Lieutenant Mulgrew holds the British Empire Medal and the Polar Medal for his work with Sir Edmund Hillary in the Antarctic. Today, Sir Edmund Hillary said he was "terribly sorry that this had to happen to a fellow climber and friend But I’m sure he win tackle his artificial limbs with the same gusto as he has shown in every other task. With his will-power he will be walking again before long."
