UNIVERSITY TEACHING

“Harder Task In Australia”

(N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 8. Although salaries were higher, teaching in Australian universites was probably harder and more arduous than in New Zealand universities. Dr. G. H. Russell, acting professor of English at Sydney University, said today. Dr. Russell, a graduate of Victoria University College, is visiting New Zealand, mainly to see his family in Wanganui. “Although the salaries of staff in Australian universities appear higher,” he said, “one of the problems we have to face is the termendous pressure of numbers. “It is probably harder to teach there because of the size of the classes. “Sydney University has about 13,000 students. The department of English alone has got 1900 students. “That makes teaching hard and the amount of time available for research shorter. “I don’t think by any means that the advantage lies with Australia in attracting staff to the academic field.” Dr. Russell said there was a good proportion of New Zealanders on the staff of almost every Australian university.
