(.VZ, Press Association) DUNEDIN. August 2. A substitute spillway gate for maintenance on the Roxburgh hydro-electric dam—the first in New Zealand, and possibly in the world—was clapped into place today on the inside face of the dam. The huge spillway gate it replaced was lifted and examined for defects, while the maintenance gate took its place, supporting the thousands of tons of water in the dam. The bulkhead caisson gate, as it is known, was being tested in service by the Ministry of Works before being handed over to the New Zealand Electricity Department for operation with the station. The operation started at 8 a m_ and was finished by 3 pm. The Ministry of Works design office representative who supervised the operation. Mr A. T. Edwards, said that the test was an entire success The bulkhead gate, he said, would be tested in the next few days in position against the other two gates which made the spillway assembly.
