ST. ANDREW’S WINS
5-0 Defeat Of St. Bede’s St. Bede's College suffered its first defeat by a college team this season when it lost, 5-0, to St. Andrew’s College at St. Andrew’s College yesterday. Attack on. so greasy a ground was confined mainly to the forwards, but there was some fine handling and line-kicking among the backs. The teams were:— St. Andrew’s College.—A. D. Sidey; P. F. Le Lievre, D. G. Spence, M. H. Smith; L. T. Evans, D. I. Wyllie; M. B. Maxwell; G. B. Robertson; A. J. Wyllie, R. S. Jones, R. J. Mars, C. R. Johnson; J. W. Ullrich, D. J. Scott, M. B. Halliday. St. Bede’s College.— C. C. Fulton; B. M. Teen, A. C. Alfeld, P. A. Horn; M. J. Tunnicliff, R. C. Walkins; J. P. Solia; M. Brownlee; A. J. Collins, P. D. Cunningham, B. J. Neilson, M. O. Moran; M. I. Dodson, B. R. Dodson, K. F. Foley.
St Bede’s had the better of the first half, the forwards obtaining the ball continually from rucks and line-outs, but could not penetrate the solid defence. Both sides used every opportunity to kick the ball into the open field and then sought to capitalise on mistakes. From one such kick M. H. Smith, the St. Andrew’s left wing, took the ball and after shaking off two defenders started on a 60-yard run. A try seemed certain but Smith’s marker, D. A. Horn, tackled him about five yards short of the line. St. Bede’s also narrowly missed scoring, and Horn looked very unlucky when he was bundled out in the comer after a good run. In the second half St. Andrew's looked a much better team. There was more purpose in its play and its fiery loose forwards continually harassed the St. Bede’s inside backs. St. Andrew’s was getting more of the ball, but found there was little else it could do but kick, and often St. Bede's gained ground in returning the kicks. During the last 15 minutes the St. Bede’s forwards again took charge, but the defence held, though there were some anxious moments. Even Packs The packs were very evenly matched, and no player really stood out. Perhaps the best was the St. Andrew’s flanker, Wyllie. At No. 8 in the line-out he was very effective in upsetting the St. Bede’s backs. Jones and Robertson also played well for St. Andrew's, and were never far from the ball. The pick of the St. Bede's forwards was the No. 8. Brownlee. He was a great asset in the line-outs and also did much good work in broken play. He was ably supported in the line-outs by Cunningham, who played especially well in the first half and narrowly missed a try when he broke through from a loose ruck. Foley and Neilson were honest workers. Neither set of backs was given much opportunity to show its worth, and the three-quarters never received the ball from set play. For St. Andrew's. Maxwell, at half-back, and Sidey, at full-back, played well. The St. Bede’s full-back, Fulton, was probably the best back on the field. His handling was excellent and his kicking sure.
After 15 minutes in the second half St. Andrew’s won the ball from a scrum five yards from the St. Bede’s line. Wyllie ran on the blind side and gave Smith a try in the comer. Wyllie converted with a magnificent kick. The referee was Mr A. R. Taylor.
