TROTTING U. Scott’s Fourth Full Of Merit

Twelve months ago U. Scott had a clear-cut win on the list of sires of three-year-olds. This season he had to be content with fourth place. However, there was greater merit in his effort than his placing on the list suggests. U. Scott had 15 starters among the three-year-olds and 10 were winners, a remarkably high percentage of the 73 individual winners in that age group. Two of his other five three-year-olds earned place money.

U. Scott’s 15 starters were a fairly high proportion of his 38 live foals of the crop resulting from 49 matings. U. Scott’s influence on trotting in both New Zealand and Australia has been tremendous and he headed the list of sires again this season. The winnings of his progeny in New Zealand now approach £900.000, and their

earnings in Australia have been estimated at from £250,000 to £300.000. U. Scott is now aged 29, but in spite of that his percentage of foals has been very high and far superior to many younger stallions. Roydon Lodge Stud, Yaldhurst. decided that U. Scott would not be available to outside breeders in 1959, but when Captain Adios was injured, U. Scott was mated with several selected mares. He served 21 mares that year and 17 of them had live foals, a percentage of 80.95. U. Scott was again mated with a

limited number of mares last spring and, according to reports, he will have a high foaling percentage again. The biggest winner among U. Scott's three-year-olds was No Comment, which earned £635. the result of three wins and four placings. However, several others, notably Axis, Sarona and Robyn among the pacers, showed sufficient promise to suggest that they will win

far beyond their present assessments in the next 12 months. U. Scott also sired the highly-promising three-year-old trotter Min Scott, which was unbeaten in three starts. She won with a lot in reserve in her three races and even though she will meet much stronger opposition in future, northern critics expect her to be one of the best trotters in the coining season.

The list of three-year-olds by U. Scott, which raced this season, is:—

Smokey Hanover was twenty-second on the list of sires of three-year-olds last year but has improved sharply to fifth this season, mainly because of the efforts of Havana Smoke, which won £1490 of the £1925 credited to his sire. Smokey Hanover had five of his three-year-olds start and they gained six wins and 10 placings. Light Brigade, Stormyway and Meadow Chief were the next most successful sires, followed by Johnny Globe, the top colonial-bred sire on the list. Johnny Globe had six starters and five individual winners, the best of -which were Gold Globe and John Scott.

Burns Night was the next most successful colonial-bred sire. He had three starters from 10 live foals, Southern Cross and Burns Rival winning races. Southern Cross Is highly rated and should be an outstanding winner next term. Great Evander was the next most successful colonialbred sire. He had only one runner, Vandette, which earned £1142 10s. Twelve months ago My Chief was third on the list, but this year he is near the tail. He had six starters, of which only two earned placemoney amounting to £5O. However, all -of his three-year-olds were lightly raced and should do better with age.

Sires, toe toree-year-olds of which earned more than £2OO, were:—

In addition there were 10 sires credited with less than £2OO, and the progeny of 18 sires earned no stake-money.
