Ancient Pipes Discovered
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter) AMMAN (Jordan). The inspector of Antiquities at Jerusalem disclosed that the Department of Antiquities has discovered ancient stone hollow pipes while labourers were working on widening the Nativity street in Bethlehem. Part of the pipes were discovered in 1940 near Mar Elias Convent. In 1951, another part was found near Rachel’s Tomb. Earlier investigations revealed that they were remains of the Roman era They were used in the second or third century A.D. in carrying water from King Solomon's Pools to Jerusalem. The Municipal Council of Bethlehem has decided to preserve the pipes in an open fence so that tourists and visitors may see them.
