ELECTRIFIED RAILWAY

Council Supports Extension

An extension of the electrified railway line to Rolleston and Kaiapoi was proposed by Cr. P. J Skellerup to the city council last evening. The council agreed to ask the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) to investigate the extension of the line.

Cr. Skellerup said advantages would be that the density of motor traffic on the southern and northern outlets would be reduced if there was cheap and rapid public transport; smog would be reduced in the Christchurch area; more use would be made of the new railway station: greater development of Christchurch and its environs would be made possible; and that the electrification of the lines would assist materially in making the South Island railway system economic.
