HOCKEY Indian Wanderers Complete Tour Unbeaten
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 15. The Indian Wanderers completed an unbeaten tour of New Zealand by defeating Auckland, 4-1, on Saturday. Auckland, which contained four New Zealand players in its forward line, matched the Indians for stickwork, and was in scoring positions many times.
The score of 4-1 could be counted as a little unlucky for the Auckland side as a whole. It could have been 2-2, for two of the Indiana’s goals were fortuitous, and G. McGregor protested against the legality of an Indian clearance from a penalty bully, instead of trying to score from it. The teams were: India—Gajinder Singh; Pirthipal Singh, Jhaman Lal Sharma; Desh Mukh, Charanjit Singh, Gurbax Singh; B. Patil, Gurdev Singh, Harbinder Singh, Udham Singh, Darshan Singh. Auckland. —J. Gordon: A. Palmer, I. Free; G. Whineray, R. Goulding. G. Atwell; A. Hayde, K. Wagstaff, G. McGregor, M. Wallan, P. Bygrave. Indians' Attack Auckland had an early taste of the Indians’ attacking power when Udham Singh moved stealthily into the circle and then Pirthipal
Singh, the penalty-corner marksman, hit his first shot like a rocket over the goal. Before long, the Auckland full-backs were split, and Harbinder Singh was through, running at speed for the goal, drawing the goal-keeper Gordon, out, and shooting past him into the right-hand corner. Then a long corner produced the most sensational goal of the match. Udham Singh’s shot was partiaUy blocked, the ball ricocheting high in the air. The ball fell on the crossbar, and as Gordon and Palmer reached high and desperately, it dropped behind them into the goal. Auckland gained a penalty bully after Bygrave had been obstructed. Desh Mukh partially cleared from the bully, but McGregor ran back and flicked the ball into an open goal. Auckland gained a penalty bully after Bygrave had been obstructed. Desh Mukh par-
Hally cleared from the bully, but McGregor ran back and flicked the ball into an open goat Indians Tire The Indians were again on the attack after the interval. A centre from Darshan Singh was turned by Harbinder Singh beautifully into the goal. Then Auckland came back strongly for its best spell of the match as the Indians tired. The Indian goal-keeper, Gajinder Singh, lay on the ball, and was ordered to defend a penalty bully. McGregor, his opponent, was apparently convinced that the goal-keeper had not touched sticks three times, and waited for the whistle to sound. But it did not, and McGregor was left standing with his hands on his hips, as the goalkeeper dribbled the ball out of the circle. Shortly afterwards, Gordon shuffled out to dispose of a rolling ball. He missed, and the ball trickled between his legs into the goal. There was no further score.
