DAMAGES CLAIM
£6350 Award To Widow (N.Z Press Association) BLENHEIM. July 15. After a retirement of a little more than four hours a jury in the Supreme Court at Blenheim last night awarded a widow a total of £6350 special and general damages against the firm of Winstone, Ltd., of Blenheim and elsewhere. The plaintiff was Ellen Josephine Haines. whose husband. Kenneth Le Strange Haines, died on September 8 last after being struck in the head with a missile fired from a rivetting gun during building operations. The firm named the contractor on the job. Bernard Jack Rowe, as third party. In the issues that were put to the jury, it was found that the company, through its servant, was negligent in a manner causing or contributing to the accident, but that Rowe and Haines had not been negligent in such a manner. Mrs Haines claimed £11,500 general and £54 0s 6d special damages. The special damages were not disputed. Mr Justice Richmond also gave judgment for the third party, Rowe, against the company, the company to pay his costs. Injustice is impiety.— Marcus Aurelius.
