IRAQ CLAIM TO KUWAIT
U.K. ‘Gunboat’ Allegation (N .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, July 14. The Iraqi military attache in London yesterday accused Britain of "gunboat diplomacy” in Kuwait. At a news conference, he called for the complete withdrawal of British forces from the Persian Gulf oil territory which Iraq claims. In Kuwait, it was announced that British forces there will be cut by onethird—but a "strong balanced force with a great deal of weapons will stay.” The Iraqi attache (Brigadier Abdul Kadir Saik) said that Iraq had not made any military moves towards Kuwait.
He claimed the Iraqi Prime Minister (General Kassem) could have taken Kuwait within six hours on June 25 or 26. “To us this operation, this gunboat diplomacy, is just another version of Suez.”
At a meeting of the Arab League in Cairo yesterday Iraq objected to a Kuwait plan to replace the British forces with an Arab task force.
The meeting was called to consider Kuwait’s application for membership. Iraq was reported to have said that historically and legally Kuwait belonged to Iraq, so there was no question of it being admitted to the Arab League.
