PLANNING FAMILIES
Maori League’s Attitude 'N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 14. The Dominion executive of the Maori Women’s Welfare League is not unanimous on the question of family planning among Maoris. This was stated in a letter from the leagues executive read at a meeting of the Maori Health Committee in Wellington, states a supplied report. At its April meeting the committee, after consideration of a paper on this subject prepared by Dr. Rina Moore, decided to refer it to the league for comment In its reply the league’s executive stated that it was not unanimous in supporting the idea of family planning and therefore could not see its way in the future to promulgating it. As an organisation it was prepared to listen but not to sponsor the lead.
The league, the letter added, was concerned with the high infant mortality rate among Maori children, but felt that this was more a matter of health education. The committee decided to defer further consideration on this until after the national conference of the league opening in Hamilton on July 24.
