Rough Rugby
Sir, —It looks as if all the heart-warming goodwill, including tributes to the referee, engendered by the opening match against the Frenchmen at Nelson, has been dissipated by rough play in their game against Taranaki. It does not matter a brass farthing who started those particular fisticuffs; the New Zealand Rugby Union, as hosts, should here and now declare that, so far as New Zealand players are concerned, they do not propose to let this tour degenerate to the level of certain previous encounters with visiting sides. They might, also, taking note of the game at New Plymouth, realise that a touring team, barely knowing the language, are not likely to enjoy having their demonstrably superior skill more or less neutralised by penalty goals, which, with all respect to the great Don Clarke, are certainly not worth the points they earn.— Yours, etc., TOUCHLINE. July 13, 1961.
