The total sheep population of New Zealand on June 30 1960, was 47.133.557—an increase of 257.335 in 12 months This is contained in the annual sheep returns, released in Parliament this afternoon The provincial totals, with the figures as at June 30, 1960. in brackets, are as follows—North Auckland 2.256,422 (2.188.039). South Auckland 6.399.118 < 8.226.895) Gisborne 2.341.377 ( 2.308 875)' Hawkes Bay 5.800 320 (5.695.176). Taranaki 1.081013 <1.077.522), Wellington 8.385.049 <8.369389). Mar" borough 1.249 903 (1.250 975) Nelson . 580.135 ( 568 538) Westland 143,493 (134 778)' 7 862.399 Otago 5.584,658 (5.653,978). Southland 5,448.772 (5,379,212). 'The number of sheep in the South Island decreased from 20.990.478 as at June 30 1960, to 20,869.360 a later. Of the 25 Canterbury counties listed in the returns only six had a greater sheep ulat '£? in ,9ao in 1959. Thev are: Amuri 439611 (430 958), ChcvS 266.438 (259967) Wairara 548.168 (512.385). Halswe 30 995 (29.786), Mount He;, bert 52.194 <51.246. and Mackenzie 662,507 (626.000).
