AUSTRALIAN PRISONER
Twice Escaped From Police (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 13. Ralph Gustav Wahle, aged 28, the handcuffed prisoner who leapt from a speeding train on Tuesday, escaped from Sydney police twice today, just when they seemed to have caught him.
The first time was this morning when he dived into Sydney Harbour with most of his clothes torn off. He had wrestled with two constables in a wild struggle at Manly. The second time was this afternoon, when Wahle was flushed from a hiding place in a Manly school-yard. While pupils were dancing to a skipping tune, police dashed through the yard brandishing revolvers. Wahle got away. A baker called the police after almost bumping into Wahle. Wahle’s first brush with the police today began when two constables took him by surprise near the Manly swimming pool in darkness Four times in a struggle Wahle broke away, and four times the police tackled him again. Most of his clothing was torn off.
Wahle has been the subject of the biggest manhunt in New South Wales since that for Kevin Simmonds in 1959.
