HOCKEY INDIANS WIN, 5-1, IN SECOND-LAST MATCH
(New Zealand Press Association)
THAMES. July 13. The Indian Wanderers maintained their unbeaten record when they beat Thames-Hauraki, 5-1, on a very heavy ground this afternoon. The half-time score was 4-1. In preparation for their final match against Auckland, the Indians fielded one of their strongest sides. Although the. ground was the softest yet encountered on the tour, play moved at a fas! pace. The match was full of thrills for the large crowd, as many of the Indians’ fines*, moves were frustrated by dogged defence. B. Clocombe, the home goal-keeper, made many spectacular saves, and was outstanding. First Goal The first goal was scored by the Indian centre-forward. Harbinder Singh, after 20 minutes. B. Patil followed up with a second goal six minutes later. Thames-Hauraki scored in the twenty-ninth minute, when the left-wing, M. O’Carroll, goaled after a spirited attack. The Indians immediately applied the pressure, and scored two quick goals in a succession of attacks launched in the last few minutes of the half. The left-back, Udham Singh, scored one, and Harbinder Singh the other. Ground Takes Toll The heavy ground began to take its toll of the Indians’ speed in the second half, and the standard of their stick-work also fell away. The captain, Udham
Singh, scored the only goal of the half, and for much of the time the Indians were hard pressed. O’Carroll was the best of the local players on attack and penetrated the defence on several occasions. These potentially-dangerous thrusts, however, failed each time for lack of sustained support.
