Surprises In Selections
The 1961 South Island representative players E Charlton and D. Simmonds are omitted from teams chosen to play in the first round of the Canterbury Football Association’s international tournament on Saturday. Charlton is replaced at centre forward in the England team by B. Rumbold (City), and K. Clark (Western) is centre-half in the New Zealand team. with Simmonds as a reserve. J. Callaghan, another 1961 South Island representative, will be in the Scotland team as a guest player. Canterbury's goal-keeper in the match against England last month, D. Chapman (Old Boys) was nominated for the New Zealand team. D. Smith (Western), and E. Brown (Wanderers) have been preferred to him. The teams will be captained by W. Rodger (Scotland), P. Rennell (New Zealand), H. Scholten (Neerlandia), and R. Durant (England).
In the first round Scotland will play New Zealand and England will play Holland. The teams will be:—
