DEMAND FOR PAPER
Big Increase Expected (N Z.P. A.-Renter —Copyright) LONDON, July 4 The demand for paper in Australia is likely to increase by more than 200 per cent, in the next 25 years, according to a review of the industry issued by the Reed Paper group today with its annual report. There would be particular emnhasis on packaging, it said. The group, with Australian associates, acquired a £2m Australian packaging concern. Paper Products (Holdings) Pty., Ltd., in mid-1960. The review said that the demand for paper in New Zeeland was also increasing steadily—stimulated by the Government’s encouragement for the growth of manufacturing industries which saved foreign exchange. The Reed group took a substantial interest in the Tasman Pulp and Paper Company, Ltd., in 1954.
With increased exports in mind, the company invited the Bowater Paper Corporation to join them in installing a second newsprint machine with a capacity of 110,000 tons which will earn an estimated £7m more annually by 1964 Ford Has £LS.7m Expansion Plan (N.Z P A.-Reuter—Copyright) MELBOURNE, July 4 The Ford Motor Company of Australia has announced a two-year £ 15.7 m expansion programme for its plants in Victoria and New South Wales. The company will move its head office from Geelong, in sou'hern Victoria, to the Melbourne suburban plant at Broadmeadows and spend £sm there. The directors say the trading result reflects the adverse effects of the financial restrictions imposed by the Commonwealth Government last November and its earlier withdrawal of import restrictions. Sales of domestic appliances and contractors supplies suffered most.
