EDUCATIONAL “INFLATION”

View Of N.Z.E.I. Article New Zealand is suffering from educational inflation—“too many children chasing too few teachers.” says an article in “National Education," the journal of the New Zealand Educational Institute, published on the eve of talks in Wellington on the shortage of teachers. “Just as money becomes devalued when too much money chases too few goods, so educational quality is now suffering,” says the article. “There can be argument: about the best size of classes.' but there can be no argument about the right of every class to one teacher." Classes in many parts of New Zealand today were without a teacher, and other children suffered frofti a procession of relieving teachers, the article said. “Some are in the charge of untrained supervisors, sometimes a helpful parent, or even a child of 12 years. This is not education—it is babysitting,” it said. Talks called by the Education Department will open in Wellington tomorrow to consider ways of meeting the teacher shortage.
