Table Tennis TENSE MATCHES SEEN IN NINTH ROUND
Two unusually close matches, between Eagles and ; Wallabies teams, marked the 'ninth round of the Canterbury Table Tennis Associa'tion's A grade competition last evening. Wallabies II beat Eagles II by 14 games I to 13, and Wallabies I beat (Eagles I by seven matches to (five, with the result hinging ion the last doubles match in .both cases. Wallabies I led. 5-2. at an early stage against Eagles 11. but Eagles levelled at 5-all. K. J. Cassidy gave the Canterbury champion, J. Armstrong. a hard tussle. losing only 17-21, 21-23. Armstrong was inclined to practise his attacking shots, and could perhaps have won more easily had he not tried to hit so many winners. Cassidy and R G. Hart led. 10-4, at the change-over in the third game of their last doubles against Armstrong and D. V. Fisher. The Eagles pair recovered to 9-2, Wallabies went ahead again a! 19-12. then Armstrong and Fisher caught up to 17-19 before losing the last two points. Three singles wins by B D. P. Williamson and two by Mrs J. Prisk gave the new team, Eagles 11. a fine chance of upsetting Wallabies 11. which holds first place equal with Selwyn. With Eagles leading by six matches to five, Wallabies won a tense final doubles to gain the decision on a count-back. Selwyn beat University without trouble. An outstanding individual result was the defeat of V. N Brightwell by G M Leech (University), who is in his first season in the A grade T. R. D. Flint won three singles for
Selwyn and R B McCallum beat Leech and H. P. Holt comfortably.
