REMAINS OF WHALE

Discovery By Students (N.Z. Press Association) | AUCKLAND. July 3. The vertebrae of a whale, estimated to be 30,000.000 to 35,000,000 years old, have been found by Auckland University students embedded in limestone in Goddard's Cave, near the Waitomo Caves. The discovery was made by P. Barrett and V McGregor, who are science students. Dr P. Valence, lecturer in geology, was a member of the party. From the vertebrae the species of the whale will be deducted, and it will play an important part in filling in gaps in the history of the whale.

The vertebrae were among a number in the limestone wall of the eave. Gelignite was used on the others without success. Alongside the vertebrae two or three ribs were recovered.
