Announcement Memorised Twice recently Christchurch television viewers have been surprised to see a yw.rvg i woman give the weather report without reading it. Miss Julie Turpin, aged 24, is the first woman announcer on television in Christchurch. Misses Airin! Grenell,- Noeline Vale and Elizabeth Gilbertson, however. have already done interview, cn television. “When announcing on television you try to imagine you are talking to a small group of people in a room,’’ Miss Turpin said yesterday. “By memorising what you have to say you make the announcement more personal and informal than by reading them. It is just a matter of knowing what ’ you are gn*n< to say before you say it.” Script Handy Miss Turpin keens typed announcements handy in case her mind “goes blank.” She does not feel that memorising a weather report is any great achievement. After graduating BA. from the University of Canterbury. Miss Turpin went to Britain and Europe for two years and taught at a modern co-educa-tion al school in England for abmit eight months. She became very interested in television as an ordinary viewer and bv wafeh'ng television shows being filmed. On her return to v<»w Zealand she jo'ned the staff of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service as a women's session assistant about a year ago. and is now a member of the Christchurch announcers’ team.
